How To Install A WordPress Plugin Manually (Step by Step Guide)

WordPress Plugin Installation Guide

If you’re new to using WordPress, one of the most important things to learn is how to install a WordPress plugin. This tutorial is a step by step explanation that teaches you how to install a WordPress plugin manually.

The first thing to do is to make sure you are an admin on your website. You will need to access your Admin Panel where the WordPress plugins installer is.

Admin Panel

  • Save

If you use WordPress, I’m sure you’re already familiar with the Admin Panel. The admin panel is the back-end of WordPress. You can ONLY do this with wordpress.org.

You CANNOT install plugins on wordpress.com websites. Don’t get confused if you’re on wordpress.com because you can only do this with wordpress.org.

  • Save

From the back end of your Admin Panel on your wordpress.org site, go over to the  “Plugins” tab on the left and click on “Plugins.” Once you click on “Plugins,”  click “Add New” to install a new WordPress plugin from your Admin page.

What Are WordPress Plugins?

  • Save

Plugins are nothing more than apps. They are not as complicated as people think or just for web developers. They are apps just like Facebook or the YouTube app on your phone.

Plugins can make your WordPress website look pretty, more presentable, and more user-friendly.

WordPress Plugin Guide

  • Save

In this step, you are going to add a plugin. You can see all the Plugins that you already have. Hover over where it says “Plugins” and click on “Add New.”

Now it shows the featured plugins. These are plugins people installed the most, like the plugin Classic Editor with over 5 million active installations. Askimet also has over 5 million active installations.

You can now understand why they’ve featured these plugins because people use them a lot and the popular plugins. You don’t have to install these just because you see them. Trust me.

If you have too many plugins, especially non-useful ones, it can slow down your website.

WordPress Plugin Installation

  • Save

Instead of installing many plugins at once, go to the dropdown menu on the right where it says “keyword.” Click in the search box where it says “search plugins” you can type in a keyword. For example, let’s say you’re looking for an SEO plugin, type in SEO.

Now it shows me different ones. Don’t install all of them. That’s not the best thing to do.

Just install one that you believe and know works.

  • Save

For example, Yoast SEO has five million-plus active installations, and Rank Math has 500,000 plus active installations. All in One SEO Pack has two-plus million active installations. Let’s say I’m going to install the Yoast SEO Plugin, just click on “Install Now,” and it’s going to install.

Give it a minute as it’s installing and wait a little bit.

  • Save

When done installing, click “Activate.” You must always click “Activate,” even if you already installed it. You have to activate it first before you can apply any type of changes to your website.

Now it is activated, so the plugin has appeared in your Admin Panel. You installed the Yoast SEO plugin.

How to Access Installed WordPress Plugins

  • Save

There are different ways to access a new plugin install. The first way is by just looking at the left-hand side and seeing it and clicking on it.

  • Save

Another way to do this is just to come back to the plugin section. Click on “plugins,” scroll and look for it. Then click on settings to make any changes.

How to Find An Installed WordPress Plugin in Admin Panel

  • Save

If you can’t find the plugin on the left-hand side, you can try a refresh. Once you refresh, it will show up on the left-hand side. Let’s say you still can’t find it on the left-hand side; another thing you can do is go to where it says “settings.”

Then you see the name of the plugin in the settings bar.

Installing Plugins with the WordPress Plugin Directory

  • Save

Another way to install a plug-in to your website apart from the technique I just showed you, is to open up a new tab and just type in wordpress.org/plugins.  This location is known as the WordPress plugin directory. It says extend your WordPress experience with 57,555 plugins.

You can come here, type in the search bar and look for a plugin.

  • Save

Let’s say we’re looking for Yoast SEO again. I’m going to type in SEO and hit enter. Then it’s going to show me all the SEO plugins.

You can click on one of them and click on “download.” Once you click on “download,” it’s in a zip file.

  • Save

When you get a zip file with a WordPress plugin, you do not need to open up the zip file. You do NOT open up a zip file, typically with a WordPress plugin. Instead, when you get a zip file, just go to Plugins > Add New, or you can just go back to Plugins.

Once you click “Add New,” you’re going to see where it says upload plugin. Click on the upload plugin and drag the file in. If you can’t drag it in,  just click on choose file and click on the file from its location.

Again, do not open up the zip file or extract the zip file.  Open it like that in the zip file and then just click on install. Now it is installed, activate the plug-in.

How to Remove an Installed WordPress Plugin

  • Save

There are different things with different plugins. If you want to remove a plugin that you don’t need anymore, find the plugin, and click on “deactivate”. Once you click on, deactivate you’re going to have the opportunity to deactivate the plugin.

Then just click on delete. Once deleted, it’s no longer on your site. Usually, WordPress websites take the code along with them.

That’s one of the reasons why I prefer WordPress to Shopify. Sometimes Shopify leaves the app code behind, but WordPress takes the code with it. Once you delete it,  it’s completely gone.

How to Update WordPress Plugins

  • Save

Sometimes specific plugins might need to be updated. The new WordPress update helps by giving you an option to enable automatic updates. This way, your plugins automatically update themselves.

If you know you want to update a plugin, you probably see an “Update Now” here and just click on “update now.” They’re also specific plugins too that are premium plugins. For these types of plugins, you have to go to the websites themselves to install them.

Follow the same technique. Do not extract the file, drop in the zip file the same way, and use the plugins as you need.

Contact Form 7
I think is the industry standard for basic contact forms. It has the ability to do more, but I haven’t used its advanced features.

Caldera Forms – More Than Contact Forms
It is useful. I find forms tedious no matter how nice the plugin is. If you have to do them, this one is good and has built-in conditional logic abilities for no extra charge (most plugins charge a premium or require a paid addition for conditionals).
