What is SSL and what are SSL certificates?

SSL i.e. Secure Sockets Layer is a standard protocol for establishing a secure connection between clients and servers over a network like the Internet. It works at the network transport layer.

SSL uses a certificate (SSL certificate) to create an encrypted connection. One would need to give all details about the identity of the website to activate SSL on their web server. These certificates are issued from Certification Authority which validates the details provided. This certificate binds a cryptographic key to the details of the organization.

While SSL certificates are installed server-side, there are visual cues in the browser that show SSL protection. If SSL is present you may see https:// in the address bar, a padlock, green address bar, or a combination of the three.
SSL secures your connection to a web server and encrypts any transferred data.
